Indian Cave State Park
NE · Shubert / Missouri River bluffs
65296 720 Rd, Shubert, NE 68437-9801
Indian Cave brings a more textured, story-filled personality to Nebraska horse travel. The landscape is deeply scenic, with wooded hills, river-country atmosphere, and a sense of history that gives the ride emotional depth as well as visual interest. It feels quieter and more immersive than many of the state’s open recreation areas, making it an excellent choice for riders who like trail systems with character. Since guided rides ended here, the park now reads even more clearly as a destination for independent horse travelers who want to bring their own mount and settle into the place at their own pace.
Riding guide
Highlights
A richly scenic bluff-country ride with mature woods, real trail mileage, and one of Nebraska’s more atmospheric bring-your-own-horse overnights.
Riding
On trail, Indian Cave offers one of the more satisfying mileage counts in eastern Nebraska. Expect wooded passages, changing terrain, and a ride that feels more exploratory than purely recreational. It suits horses and riders who enjoy moving through landscape rather than simply circling a reservoir.

Trailer parking
The established equestrian camp is the best staging point, with toilets, water hydrant, grills, tables, hitching posts, and 12 corrals for riders bringing their own horses.
Horse regulations
Guided trail rides have been discontinued, but the equestrian trails and horse camp remain open for guests traveling with private horses. Ride only on designated routes and follow all posted park-entry, campground, and trail rules.
Getting here
For riders hauling in, the equestrian campground is the obvious home base. It offers the fundamentals you actually need—water, corrals, hitching posts, tables, grills, and restrooms—and the first-come, first-served structure gives the stay a rustic, self-directed feel. Organization matters a little more here than at the state’s most turn-key parks, but the reward is a more peaceful camp atmosphere.
Planning your visit
This is a strong pick for riders who want scenery, shade, and a little more solitude. Because the horse camp is first-come, first-served, arriving earlier in the day is the most relaxed way to secure your spot and settle in before riding.
Where to stay
Horse camping is a major reason to come. While the amenities are rustic rather than resort-like, the established camp gives the destination real overnight credibility and makes dawn and dusk riding especially appealing.
