Jacks Creek Horse Camp

NM · Tererro / Pecos Wilderness

NM 63, 21 miles north of Pecos, Tererro, NM 87573

Jacks Creek Horse Camp feels like a classic aspen-and-conifer mountain camp where the air feels colder, the scenery feels richer, and the entire place reads like a proper destination for dedicated horse travelers. Jacks Creek feels made for this project: scenic, functional, and deeply rooted in the experience of arriving with horses and staying long enough to enjoy the mountains properly.

Riding guide

Highlights

One of the state’s signature equestrian camps, with true mountain character and the kind of infrastructure riders are always hoping to find.

Riding

On horseback, expect high-country forest riding with genuine Pecos Wilderness atmosphere, strong route options, and the satisfying sense that the trail day can be as ambitious or as relaxed as you choose. Direct horse-camp access to Pecos Wilderness trail country, with broad connections toward Jacks Creek, Beatty’s, and neighboring high-country routes The experience is more about atmosphere, scenery, and quality of movement than racing from landmark to landmark.

Trailer parking

Eight equestrian campsites, five corrals plus highline options at additional sites, and space for roughly 15 horse trailers make this one of New Mexico’s most purpose-built horse camps.

Horse regulations

Follow site rules, use the equestrian facilities as intended, and remember that potable water may be unavailable. Pack in what you need, pack out appropriately, and check current opening status before hauling up. Standard trail etiquette still applies: stay on open routes, yield thoughtfully, and leave staging and camp areas cleaner than you found them.

Getting here

Arrival is best when you once you reach camp, the layout is impressively horse centered, with trailer space and corrals that make settling in noticeably easier than at a standard mixed-use campground. Eight equestrian campsites, five corrals plus highline options at additional sites, and space for roughly 15 horse trailers make this one of New Mexico’s most purpose-built horse camps. It is the kind of place where a little preparation keeps the start of the ride calm and polished.

Planning your visit

This is a wonderful midsummer or early-fall mountain ride, especially when aspens are turning. Bring layered clothing, all stock water you may need, and enough time to enjoy camp life as much as the miles. A quick conditions check before departure is always worthwhile, especially where weather, road access, or seasonal management can change the experience.

Where to stay

Horse camping is the reason to come, and the camp’s equestrian setup supports it beautifully. There is currently no potable water, so bring your own and think of the experience as polished by planning rather than by services. For riders traveling with a self-contained rig, that overnight flexibility is part of what gives the destination its real appeal.
