Deschutes River State Recreation Area

OR · Wasco / Lower Deschutes

89600 Biggs-Rufus Highway, Wasco, OR 97065

Deschutes River State Recreation Area is the kind of ride riders talk about long after the dust is off the boots. Spring access, big canyon scenery, and a reservation-managed trail create a destination that feels distinctive before you ever swing into the saddle. The experience is more curated than casual, which is part of its charm: riders who plan well are rewarded with open views, a memorable route, and one of the state’s most singular equestrian outings.

Riding guide

Highlights

A dramatic canyon ride with reservation-controlled access, big river-country visuals, and one of Oregon’s most distinctive spring-only equestrian experiences.

Riding

The Deschutes ride feels different from almost everything else in the state sheet. The former railbed keeps the grade approachable while the canyon scenery does the visual heavy lifting—cliffs, river light, open sky, and a sense of scale that feels quietly cinematic.

Rideable terrain

22 miles

Trailer parking

Trailer staging begins at the campground entrance parking lot, and riders should pre-plan because access is reservation-limited and not designed for casual last-minute hauling.

Horse regulations

Advanced reservations are required, the season runs March 1 through June 30, riding is sunrise to sunset, no overnight horse camping is allowed, horses must stay on the trail, and stock may not be watered at the river’s edge.

Getting here

This is a planning-first destination. The trail is reservation-managed, starts from the campground entrance parking lot, and works best for riders who arrive organized, early, and clear on the route and seasonal window.

Planning your visit

Think spring, not summer. Pack for exposure, carry more water than you think you need, and keep the limited daily rider capacity in mind when building the trip. This is a best-in-class destination for riders who love scenery and structure in equal measure.

Where to stay

No overnight horse camping is allowed, so this is a pure day-use ride. Most travelers pair it with lodging elsewhere in the Columbia Gorge corridor or fold it into a broader road-trip stop rather than building an equestrian base onsite.
