Westside Road / Tiger Summit Trailhead
Tiger Mountain is where ambitious Seattle-area riders go when they want more than a casual park loop. The forest rises quickly into bigger terrain, and the ride feels athletic, green, and foothills-serious. It is not remote in the classic eastern-Washington sense, but it absolutely gives you the sense of being in a larger landscape.
Riding guide
Highlights
Close to Seattle but still satisfyingly wild in feel, Tiger Mountain delivers athletic riding with serious access to the Issaquah foothills.
Riding
Several Tiger Summit trails allow horseback riding, including the Grand Canyon Trail, Horse By-Pass, South Tiger Powerline, South Tiger Traverse, and portions of the connector network. The result is a ride that feels more like real route-building than a single loop-and-back experience.
Rideable terrain
35+ miles
Trailer parking
Tiger Summit is the key equestrian trailhead; expanded trailer parking is part of the current trailhead renovation project.
Horse regulations
Trail access is use-specific, so riders need to pay attention to exactly which Tiger Summit routes allow horses. Seasonal closures and storm damage can also affect parts of the network, and DNR notices should be checked before hauling.
Getting here
Tiger Summit is the equestrian entry point to know, and DNR is actively expanding and modernizing the trailhead with added accessibility and dedicated horse-trailer capacity. That long-term investment tells you everything about how important this riding area has become.
Planning your visit
As of early 2026, the Tiger Summit Trailhead renovation process has affected normal access, with reopening tied to final inspections. That does not make the destination unusable, but it does mean current conditions need to be verified before you go.
Where to stay
There is no horse camping here, so the appeal is all about quality day riding. Fortunately, the location makes it easy to combine a strong ride with city-adjacent lodging, restaurants, and support services if you are styling a more comfortable overnight trip nearby.
