Columbia Hills Historical State Park
WA · Lyle / Columbia Gorge
8514 Lewis & Clark Highway
Columbia Hills feels expansive before you even unload—a destination of sunlit grassland, basalt cliffs, and sweeping Columbia River views that read instantly as special. This is a different Washington than the mossy west-side forests. The light is brighter, the space is wider, and the terrain has a layered, almost Western-film drama to it. In spring, the grasslands and wildflowers add an extra editorial kind of beauty that photographs as well as it rides.
Riding guide
Highlights
Wildflower country, big Columbia views, and broad-open Gorge riding give this park one of the most cinematic horseback experiences in Washington.
Riding
The riding here is all about space, views, and a sense of movement across open country. Compared with forest parks, Columbia Hills feels more panoramic and more exposed, which can be thrilling for riders who appreciate scenery with real scale and horizon.
Rideable terrain
3,338 acres
Trailer parking
Use the Dalles Mountain Ranch or Crawford Oaks trailheads for the most practical horse-trailer access to the open riding network.
Horse regulations
Horse access is limited to designated areas and trails, and some culturally significant or tour-only zones are not open for casual wandering. Seasonal campground operations and current alerts should be checked in advance, especially in shoulder seasons.
Getting here
For equestrians, the important detail is choosing the right access point. The park map identifies equestrian use and trailer-oriented trailheads around the Dalles Mountain Ranch and Crawford Oaks areas, which makes route planning far more elegant than simply aiming for the general park address and hoping for the best.
Planning your visit
Bring more water than you think you need, and plan around sun, wind, and exposed conditions. If you catch this park in spring bloom or on a clear fall day, it can easily become one of the most memorable rides in the state.
Where to stay
Camping is available in the broader park, but this is best approached as a scenic riding destination first and a polished overnight second. The advantage is that the camping lets you stay close to the landscape rather than rushing the day and hauling out too soon.
