Tahuya River Horse Camp

WA · Belfair / Tahuya State Forest

Goat Ranch Forest Road, Belfair, WA 98528

Tahuya River Horse Camp is one of those destinations that makes horse travel feel wonderfully real—less polished, perhaps, but more immersive and deeply rider-specific. The camp sits near the Tahuya River in dense forest country, where the atmosphere is cool, wooded, and quietly remote without being impossibly far from western Washington population centers. It has a genuine 'out in the trees' feel that many riders crave.

Riding guide

Highlights

A true horse-camp base in the Tahuya woods, with more room, more trailer flexibility, and a pleasantly self-sufficient backcountry-camp mood.

Riding

The surrounding forest offers access to a large web of multi-use trails. Tahuya is known for extensive recreation, so the experience is less about one branded loop and more about having room to create a ride that suits your horse, your confidence, and the day you want.

Trailer parking

Drive-in access on weekends in season; campsites can accommodate trailers up to about 30 feet depending on site.

Horse regulations

The horse camp is for non-motorized camping, and DNR specifically asks visitors not to ride ORVs in the campground. Discover Pass rules, leash and quiet-hour rules, and seasonal drive-in limitations all deserve attention before you haul.

Getting here

DNR has made this one pleasantly functional for horse users. Trailer capacity is stronger here than at some smaller camps, the campground is distinctly non-motorized in character, and the turn-around and corral support help the site feel purpose-built rather than borrowed.

Planning your visit

Amenities are rustic and water may be non-potable, so come prepared. If that level of self-sufficiency appeals to you, Tahuya River Horse Camp can feel like one of western Washington's more rewarding under-the-radar equestrian bases.

Where to stay

Camping is available on weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and this is exactly the sort of place where settling in overnight changes the whole mood. It becomes less a day trip and more a real horse-camp weekend with dinner, dawn chores, and another ride tomorrow.
