Keyhole State Park

WY · Moorcroft / Keyhole Reservoir

22 Marina Rd, Moorcroft, WY 82721

Keyhole has a softer, more social equestrian energy than Wyoming’s big backcountry trailheads, and that is exactly its charm. Set on the western edge of the Black Hills, the park combines open sky, water views, and an easy camp rhythm that suits riders who want comfort, simplicity, and enough room to unwind. It is less about extreme mileage and more about the pleasure of having your horses settled, your trailer staged well, and a ride ready just behind camp.

Riding guide

Highlights

A Black Hills-edge reservoir park with reservable horse corrals and easygoing camp-based riding.

Riding

Riding here is about ease, atmosphere, and the pleasure of moving through grassland-and-reservoir scenery without overcomplicating the day. The trail behind the corrals lets you roll directly from camp into the landscape, which is a luxury in itself when you are managing tack, feed, and trailer time. For families, friend groups, or road-tripping riders, that low-friction access is a major plus.

Trailer parking

The most rider-friendly staging is at the reservable horse corrals in the third loop of Homestead Campground, where trailer parking, water containers on the corrals, and adjacent space for stock help keep camp logistics straightforward.

Horse regulations

Use certified weed-free hay while using the corrals, pay applicable day-use and camping fees, and follow seasonal availability rules for the horse sites. Because the corrals are a specific reservable amenity, plan ahead rather than assuming equestrian space will be open at arrival.

Getting here

The park’s horse setup is centered on Homestead sites 44, 45, and 46, where reservable corrals create one of the more user-friendly arrivals in the Wyoming state-park system. Each corral has an attached water container, and riders may also picket livestock in the adjacent field. It is the kind of layout that makes arrival feel calmer, especially for groups or riders traveling with younger horses.

Planning your visit

This is one of Wyoming’s easier equestrian parks logistically, but it still rewards advance planning. Reserve early for peak dates, bring the feed and water setup your horse prefers, and treat the Black Hills weather like a real variable rather than a footnote. Shoulder-season mornings can feel especially crisp.

Where to stay

Horse camping is absolutely part of the destination identity. The corrals are the headline amenity, and they make this park especially attractive for riders who want a dependable overnight base instead of a bare-bones trailhead experience. Nearby Black Hills touring, Devils Tower side trips, and the reservoir setting make it easy to turn a simple camp into a very good Wyoming weekend.
