Guernsey State Park
WY · Guernsey / Platte River country
2187 Lake Side Drive, Guernsey, WY 82214
Guernsey offers a different kind of Wyoming ride: less raw wilderness, more atmosphere, history, and graceful lake-country scenery. The park’s CCC legacy gives it a sense of character that riders often appreciate once they are off the highway and moving through the landscape. Reservoir views, old stonework, and a patchwork of roads and trails make it feel like a destination with personality, not just a stopover with permissive horse access.
Riding guide
Highlights
Historic CCC-era scenery and west-side reservoir trails make Guernsey feel cultured, scenic, and quietly distinctive.
Riding
The riding experience is especially appealing for scenic-minded riders who enjoy varied perspective rather than relentless mileage. This is a place for reservoir overlooks, historical atmosphere, and a more measured rhythm under saddle. The west-side access keeps the experience feeling open and photogenic, and the broader park setting makes even a shorter outing feel satisfying and curated.
Rideable terrain
14 miles
Trailer parking
There is no dedicated luxury-style equestrian camp loop here, so the best approach is to stage thoughtfully and keep horses away from developed campground and picnic zones where stock are prohibited.
Horse regulations
Horseback riding is permitted year-round, but stock are prohibited in developed campgrounds and picnic areas. Follow standard park fees, keep to allowed roadways and trails, and review current park conditions before hauling in.
Getting here
Arrive with a plan and a park map rather than improvising from the campground loops. Horse use is allowed on roadways and on hiking trails on the western side of the reservoir, while developed campgrounds and picnic areas are off-limits to stock. That distinction matters here, and riders who treat arrival and staging with a little extra care will have a much smoother day.
Planning your visit
Because horse access is more specific here than at a true equestrian camp, do your homework before arrival. Bring the park map, know your west-side routes, and be realistic about heat, wind, and shoreline exposure. This is a stronger ride when it is well planned than when it is treated casually.
Where to stay
While Guernsey has extensive camping overall, it is better thought of as a day-riding or nearby-base destination for horse travelers than as a dedicated horse-camp park. That said, riders pairing it with heritage travel, reservoir recreation, or an elegant small-town overnight can build a very attractive southeastern Wyoming itinerary around it.
