Battle Park Trailhead
WY · Ten Sleep / Bighorn Mountains
FSR 24 via FSR 27 off US Hwy 16, Ten Sleep, WY 82442
Battle Park is exactly the kind of mountain horse camp riders dream about when they say they want the real thing. The setting is high, green, and unmistakably Bighorn, and the infrastructure is built with stock users in mind rather than added as an afterthought. For riders headed toward Cloud Peak country, this is not just convenient—it feels like a proper beginning.
Riding guide
Highlights
A classic Bighorn equestrian base camp with corrals, highlines, and direct access to Cloud Peak country.
Riding
Battle Park gives direct access to multiple trails and nearby Cloud Peak Wilderness travel, so the riding can be shaped to your ambition. You can plan a scenic day ride or set up for a more serious backcountry effort. The terrain has the mountain-meadow-and-forest beauty many equestrians travel across states to find, and it rewards riders who like true alpine-adjacent country.
Trailer parking
Battle Park is notably horse-forward: camping across the road, 15 campsites, corrals, highlines, hitching racks, water troughs, and a mounting ramp create one of the better trailhead staging experiences in the Bighorns.
Horse regulations
Wilderness regulations apply beyond the trailhead, Cloud Peak Wilderness registration is required, the stay limit is 14 days, and camping is only allowed in the designated area across the road. Stock users should also follow all current food, weed, and waste rules for wilderness travel.
Getting here
The arrival experience is unusually satisfying because the layout actually respects how horse people travel. The camping area with facilities sits across the road from the trailhead, and riders have access to corrals, highlines, hitching racks, water troughs, and a mounting ramp. It is the sort of place where camp can come together efficiently and leave more energy for the ride itself.
Planning your visit
Mountain weather, elevation, and wilderness expectations deserve respect. Bring a current map, check conditions before hauling in, and remember that even a beautifully equipped horse camp still asks for self-reliance. Riders who plan carefully are rewarded with one of Wyoming’s premier public mountain equestrian bases.
Where to stay
Horse camping is integral here, not incidental. With 15 campsites and stock amenities that genuinely support multi-day use, Battle Park works beautifully as a destination base rather than a one-night compromise. If your idea of luxury includes cool mountain air, a settled horse camp, and stars over the trailer, this one lands beautifully.
