Hunter Campground

WY · Buffalo / Bighorn Mountains

FSR 396 off FSR 19 / US Hwy 16, Buffalo, WY 82834

Hunter Campground is easy to admire because it solves so many equestrian problems before they become problems. Set in the Bighorns west of Buffalo, it pairs mountain scenery with one of the simplest horse-camping propositions in Wyoming: every campsite has its own livestock corral. That immediately gives the place a more settled, more comfortable, and frankly more luxurious feel than many public horse camps.

Riding guide

Highlights

Individual livestock corrals at every campsite make Hunter exceptionally easy for horse campers.

Riding

The Bighorn setting gives you exactly what many riders hope for in a mountain campground: timber, cool air, and direct access to horseback riding and camping opportunities without the formality of a giant trailhead complex. The mood is relaxed and capable rather than flashy, which makes it especially attractive for riders who value ease and repeatability.

Trailer parking

This is one of the most comfortable public-land horse-camping setups in the region because each campsite comes with its own livestock corral and there is potable water on site.

Horse regulations

Reservations, seasonal dates, and the 14-day stay limit all apply, and wilderness regulations govern nearby travel. Follow current Bighorn National Forest rules, keep dogs leashed where required, and review conditions before heading up the mountain.

Getting here

Arrival is especially pleasant for riders who travel with organization in mind. Knowing each site has an individual corral makes campsite choice and horse management far less stressful, and the presence of potable water nudges the whole experience a step beyond bare-bones. It is still forest camping, of course, but it feels unusually well suited to the realities of equestrian travel.

Planning your visit

Hunter is straightforward, but mountain weather and summer demand still deserve respect. Reserve when possible, confirm road status, and arrive with a realistic plan for your ride mileage and camp setup. Done right, it is one of Wyoming’s easiest and most satisfying public horse-camping overnights.

Where to stay

Horse camping is the heart of Hunter. With corrals at every site, the campground works beautifully for multiday stays, friend-group trips, or anyone who wants a practical mountain base without overcomplicated logistics. It is one of those public campgrounds that can make you feel much more taken care of than the price point suggests.
